CMS Proposes To Eliminate Payments for Consultations - The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the proposed rule for the 2010 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule on July 1st. AACE is still reviewing the 1100+ page document, however one proposed change of great concern is the elimination of payment for consultations provided in both the office and hospital setting. If enacted, AACE members would use E/M codes for new patient or existing patient office visits. CMS states that the resulting savings will be redistributed to increase payments for all existing E/M codes. The rule also contains an across-the-board 21.5% reduction in Medicare payments effective January 1, 2010, due to the current physician payment law based on the flawed sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula. These two provisions alone would result in significant pay reductions for AACE members, which AACE will actively oppose. AACE will provide additional details on the proposed rule in the days and weeks ahead. Medicare Scam Alert
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has become aware of a scam where perpetrators are sending faxes to physician offices posing as the Medicare carrier or Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC). The fax instructs physician staff to respond to a questionnaire to provide an account information update within 48 hours in order to prevent a gap in Medicare payments. The fax may have the CMS logo and/or the contractor logo to enhance the appearance of authenticity.
Medicare FFS providers, including physicians, non-physician practitioners, should be wary of this type of request. If you receive a request for information in the manner described above, please check with your contractor before submitting any information. Medicare providers should only send information to a Medicare contractor using the address found in the download section of the CMS.gov website found at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/MLNGenInfo/ or http://www.cms.hhs.gov/MedicareProviderSupEnroll
Member Alert - FDA Alert RE: Levemir
AACE Member,
The FDA has issued the following Public Health Advisory regarding Levemir Insulin:
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has learned that some stolen vials of the long-acting insulin Levemir made by Novo Nordisk Inc. have reappeared and are being sold in the U.S. market. Three lots or a total of 129,000 vials of this product were stolen in all. These stolen insulin vials may not have been stored and handled properly and may be dangerous for patients to use.
The FDA has received one report of a patient who suffered an adverse event due to poor control of glucose levels after using a vial from one of these three lots.
The agency is advising patients who use Levemir insulin to:
- Check your personal supply of insulin to determine if you have Levemir insulin from one of the following lots: XZF0036, XZF0037, and XZF0038. Patients can locate the lot number on the side of the box of insulin and also on the side of the vial.
- Do not use your Levemir insulin if it is from one of these lots. Replace it with a vial of Levemir insulin from another lot. If you must switch to another brand of insulin for any reason, first contact your healthcare provider as another insulin product may require adjustments in dosing.
- Always visually inspect your insulin before using it. Levemir is a clear and colorless solution.
- Contact the Novo Nordisk Customer Care Center at 800-727-6500 for what to do with vials from these lots or if you have any other questions.
